n the rural communities of Mexico’s coffee-producing areas, it is common for women to be the lone providers for their families (due to the high rate of migration among the men in their families) while unfairly being compensated less because of their gender. In 2005 the CESMACH cooperative created the Café Femenino Mexico Program as a way to fight back against the economic and educational disparity for the women coffee producers in the region. This program, which currently represents 146 women, has helped secure access to fair compensation, industry education, healthcare, nutritional programs, and land ownership.
